Hi, all!
CQ gets to make their own rules. But we can still protest them.
A basic rule is possession is nine-tenths of the law. The Russians possess Crimea. The Crimea has been Russian since Ivan the Terrible took it from the Tartars in the 16th Century. Sevastopol was originally a Greek city state. It was an ally of the Roman Empire during the 1st to 5th centuries. It was conquered by the various steppe tribes during the dark ages. It was taken by the Tartars in the middle ages.
Now about Donetsk; that area was settled by Russians a long time ago. When Khrushchev became premier of the Soviet Union he gave that territory to the Ukraine. Why? Because Khrushchev was Ukrainian. When the Soviet Union broke up in the 1990s, Ukraine kept it.
I believe that any group of people in an area have a right to self-determination. That is the basis of the Declaration of Independence of these United States. I would love the world to have a thousand different nations. Smaller governments to serve local populations and more responsive to their citizens.
That's my opinion for what it is worth.
Disclaimer - My great grandfather was a trooper in a Russian cossack cavalry regiment during the Russo-Japanese War. I also have some knowledge of the Russian language.
