Linux+Wine
To get started with JT65-HF you will need to download the latest build from the group's files area. While in alpha testing the builds will be labeled jt65-hf-a##.zip. If more then one build is listed you will, probably, want the latest (highest) numbered build. But... check the group messages in case an issue has been found with the latest build where you might wish to use the previous build.
Having downloaded a build you will need to decompress the archive file. This will give you a folder named jt65-hf-a## and inside that folder will (depending upon your archive tool) will either be the files necessary to run the program or another folder named jt65-hf-a##. Continue until you've opened the folder containing jt65-hf.exe, and a collection of supporting dll files. When you've located jt65-hf.exe you may double click it to begin. At this point there is no installer, you simply run it from the folder. Once alpha testing is completed an installer will be provided with all the niceties of having the program in the start menu and more streamlined updating.
Once you've launched JT65-HF.EXE you will be presented with a window for your station configuration. There's a lot going in in the configuration window, but, only a few of the items are of critical importance in getting started.
1. Fill in your call sign to the entry box labeled Callsign. It must consist of only the letters A-Z, number 0-9. Prefixed/Suffixed calls are not (yet) supported. Coming soon though.
2. Fill in your grid square. 4 or 6 character grid is accepted. This is a REQUIRED field. You can not operate JT65 without a grid set.
3. Select your sound input device from the input device menu. If you only have one sound device the default selection is probably fine.
4. Select your sound output device from the output device menu. Same applies to it as the input re default.
5. Select your PTT Port unless you use VOX or a device that asserts PTT on its own (for example, rig expert devices).
6. Click button bar at bottom to Save.
Don't worry about sample rate correction fields yet. Also note that several options show in the window but are disabled. This is by intent as those features are not yet implemented or not yet ready for use.
After saving your configuration the main program window is ready for use.
Starting from the upper left hand corner you will see the audio input level indicators. Notice that you have indications for both the left and right input channels. Depending upon how your rig to sound card interface is wired you may have audio on only one side or both. In the picture you see that I have equal audio on both sides (my cable is wired to bridge the Left/Right inputs with the mono output from my rig). If your input channels are equal there is no advantage to one side versus the other. If you have audio on both sides but it's unequal you could open your mixer control and be sure that the balance setting is set for equal left to right balance, check your wiring or ignore the imbalance. All that matters is the selected channel has proper input level.
Proper input level. This is a crtical setting as it effects the overall result you'll obtain. With no strong signals present in your RX passband (best case, your normal background static level) you should indicate 0 for your numeric input value which corresponds to mid scale on the graphical indicator. If your level is too high/low you should adjust your input level the mixer control provided in windows. Do not use the in program audio gain control unless you MUST. Ideally you should have a setting in the windows mixer control of about half full scale input level to result in a 0 reading in JT65-HF. This leaves the ADC on your sound card with room to handle stronger/weaker levels without distortion. If all else fails and you can not get a good input level you may try using the in program controls. Better documentation needs to be/will be written in this regard, but, hopefully, this is enough to start.
Having configured your audio inputs to reasonable value you should see the waterfall display painting signals/static and not see RED in the graphical audio level metering. Red bars indicate over/under reasonable levels.
Once the audio input levels have been brought to reasonable values you should, eventually, begin to see decoded sequences appear in the decoder output window just below the clock display. Notice in the capture below that a number of decodes are showing. Pay particular attention to lines with either green or red backgrounds. Green indicates a station calling CQ while red indicates your own call sign is contained in the line. Grey indicates that the decode is likely a QSO in progress.
If you double click on a line the program will make its best guess as to what the proper response sequence should be, and in the case of a line marked in green or red, will setup the response message, TX offset frequency to be zero beat with remote station, select the proper TX period and enable transmit. In the case of a line marked in gray background the program will make its best guess as to a proper message, set all the other parameters mentioned previously, but, will not enable transmit. You will have to do that yourself if you wish to "tail end" a QSO. Once you've generated the initial response it's best to then use the buttons to form the following messages. Better documentation will be forthcoming, but, if you've run JT65 before it shouldn't be too hard to figure out.
Another item to note is that you have two message buffers. "Generated" on the left and Free Text on the right. Generated contains messages formed by either double clicking or use of the message buttons and can not be edited. Free text allows up to 13 characters to be entered. Be sure to select the buffer you wish to use with the tick buttons above the message boxes. Note the selected buffer is shown with a red label. Double clicking either of the message buffers will clear it.
Multi-Decode.
Multi decode will decode all JT65 signals within the set RX passband that can be decoded. Notice the green line between the spectrum display heading and first line of spectrum. It marks the RX passband of the decoder. The red markers indicate the CF or the approximate place where your JT65 tones will be upon transmit. A reasonable value for the multi decoder is set as the default. As you gain more experience you may wish to change those values. I also leave AFC checked on my systems... it seems to help both with signals that have actual frequency drift and signals that fade. It's more habit with me to have AFC enabled than anything I can say for a fact, so, set it as you wish.
RB Settings.
If you wish to send your reception reports to the RB network you will need to enter your DIAL frequency to the box labeled Dial QRG KHz. It's serious about KHz. 14076 = Good. 14.076 = Bad. If you've entered a valid frequency and have entered a valid call sign and grid in the configuration screen you should have the option to check the box Enable RB. Please try to remember to keep your dial frequency setting correct as you move from band to band. We all foget at times, so it's not the end of the world, but... keep it in mind. Other RB options, save to file and offline mode are less used. Save to file save a CSV file to your JT65-HF directory named decodes.csv listing your receptions. It can be opened with a text editor or imported into other programs to play with the data. Offline Mode allows you to log RB reports where no internet is available then add those to the database at a later time.
I hope this has been enough to help get started with the program. Better documentation is, of course, on the to do list.

RB Network to Live
January 27th, 2010 · No Comments
Yes, I am indeed turning about on my asserting the RB Network termination on February 8.
I have much work to do in the face of this change so I’m not going to speak at length (yet) as to the reasons for my change in this matter, but, that will come.
To be clear. The RB Network WILL NOT be ending on 2/8/2010. More to come.

Victor!
